The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) brought a total of 46 lawsuits and administrative proceedings against cryptocurrency companies last year, Cointelegraph reported, citing a report by global legal consultancy Cornerstone Research. This was more than double the number of cases in 2021 (20), and the most since 2013. In 2023, the SEC levied $281 million in fines in connection with the 46 enforcement actions. "These data show that cryptocurrency regulation is one of the regulator's top priorities," the report states. "Over the past two years, the number of SEC enforcement actions against crypto companies has steadily increased. This has occurred during Gary Gensler's tenure as commissioner. Commissioner Gensler uses enforcement actions as a means to an end, not as an end in themselves."
